UAA Brain Bee for Grades 9-12

  • February 11, 2017
  • Anchorage, Alaska

The annual Alaska Brain Bee is coming fast!  This competition has grown throughout the years and we are excited to invite the Alaska science teachers and their students to attend this year’s event. The Brain Bee is a fun and lighthearted neurological competition that will be held for students in grades 9-12 who are interested in the fields of neuroscience, biology, psychology, psychiatry, and medicine. The University of Alaska Anchorage has partnered with the Anchorage Museum to host the event at the Rasmuson Center on February 11, 2017.

The Brain Bee is part of an initiative to foster an interest in science, as well as to provide information to students about careers in the field of neurology. Cash prizes will be awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. Additionally, the 1st place winner and a guardian will be flown to Baltimore, Maryland to compete in the National Brain Bee. Registration through the UAA Department of Biological Sciences<https://www.uaa.alaska.edu/academics/college-of-arts-and-sciences/departments/biological-sciences/department-events/brain-bee/index.cshtml> will open in October.

The competition will feature three parts. Students will begin with many interactive Neuroscience activities including sheep brain dissections and a medical case study. This will be followed by the question and answer forum and neuroanatomy competition wherein the competitors will identify structures of the human brain. Interested students can prepare for the competition by utilizing the following resources:

•    Reading Brain Facts, which is available on the SFN website<http://www.brainfacts.org/book>.

•    Viewing Kahn academy’s published lectures available at kahnacademy.com<http://kahnacademy.com>

•    Following the practice questions and related videos posted on the UAA Brain Bee Facebook page

If a teacher is interested in having a short presentation about the Brain Bee featured in their school or classroom, they can contact Dr. Caroline Wilson at chwilson@uaa.alaska.edu<mailto:chwilson@uaa.alaska.edu>. Interested students are welcome to contact myself or Dr. Wilson via email or on the UAA Brain Bee Facebook page.

Dr. Wilson and I would like to reach out to all high-school science teachers in Alaska, so that they in turn can let their students know about this academic competition.  Any ASTA's assistance and support in our outreach efforts will be greatly appreciated!

Thank you for your time and dedication,
